Text: Luke 18: 9-14
 
Today’s sermon considers the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, two very different men who came at the same time to the Temple to pray.

Jesus makes it clear from the very beginning of this text that he is dealing with the problems of pride. While there is a positive side to pride there is also problematic pride as in the words of Jesus here:
‘Jesus told this parable to people who were sure of their own goodness and despised everyone else.’

The parable makes us think on who is ‘right with God’. As Jesus says in conclusion of this tale: “those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”

There is a matrix for looking at parables that uses the ideas of picture, window, mirror and doorway. We will use this model to delve into the parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge today.

What do we see in the picture produced by the parable, and as we turn our attention to the window of the world around us? How do we see ourselves in the picture, and how will we then apply this?

I will bless the Lord at all times;
    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
   and let us exalt his name together!
 I sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
